Mapi acuna

Hi, I’m Mapi Acuna self-taught sculptor and the human behind Phenomena

Vancouver based, Colombian self-taught sculptor with a bachelors in Media arts.

Although coming from a long lineage of artists she considers that her artistic journey really began later in life when she shifted to the culinary world trying to find a more “hands-on” experience after yeats of working in the photograohy and media field.

This professional move lead  to a turn when she first sculpted with modelling chocolate. This started as a playful experiment but soon became a passion that led her to ceramics by the end of 2023, a medium that gave her work permanence and depth.

Acuna’s sculptures exist in the space between realism and the surreal, where meticulously sculpted facial features merge subtle distortions and enigmatic details. Her work explores themes of transformation, philosophy, politics and consciousness, through raw textures, or natural elements. She embraces clay’s unpredictability, letting its organic qualities guide her process. For Acuna, the human form is more than anatomy, it is a vessel for memory, emotion, and the unseen forces that shape our existence.
